“My venue won’t allow engraving. What else can we do?”
You may be familiar with my work specifically from the glass engraving projects I’ve been a part of: fragrance bottles for Glossier and Saks Fifth Avenue, wine bottles at the Buckhead Publix, or even mirror engraving at the Mariah the Scientist concert.
Many of my clients come to me for glass engraving, wanting to offer their guests something personal to take home and look at fondly to remember the event they attended.
However, glass engraving is only ONE of the media that I offer!
Not sure which kind of personalization to choose? This is your guide to live event personalization ideas. Read until the end to get access to my PDF guide, including links to tried-and-true products I use for customizations.
When to Choose Live Engraving
Live engraving is when I etch into the product's surface, leaving a permanent mark. I can engrave on glass, metal, and some plastics.
Engraving is one of the customizations that can be done swiftly: initials on glass take less than a minute to complete! This is one of the reasons why engraving is often a popular choice for high-volume events.

My three favorite products to engrave:
Glassware: a classic choice at weddings is to have guests choose between a wine or a rocks glass. It is recognizable, and even initials make the piece “pop”.
Fragrance Bottles: Not only do I have the opportunity to engrave at retail stores, but this has also become a fav at weddings! Earlier this year, I worked a wedding event where they had a “make your own fragrance” BAR! It was such a hit! Guests went to make their custom scent, brought the finished bottle to our station, and there we engraved their name right onto the bottle! Talk about a personal touch!
Compact Mirrors: Online, this has been all the rage for bridesmaid gifts - and for good reason! They are absolutely stunning. Here’s the thing most people don’t talk about when it comes to engraving on mirrors: you have to be intentional about the materials. There are compact mirrors that are metal on the outside and others that are plastic.
The metal products have options: you can engrave on the outside or on the inside of the actual mirror. For the plastic compact mirrors, there are certain ones where you can engrave the outside (the Chanel brand is a good example), but I have also worked with other mirrors (like the ones from the Mariah the Scientist concert) where the plastic is so thin that the engraving would not look clean, but jagged. This is why working with an experienced artist is a must! I can tell you the best placement for engraving depending on what item you want to personalize.
Engraving is the right choice for your event if you need to serve a high volume of guests, a quick turnaround time with your personalization, and, of course, a result that looks luxurious (without requiring a lot of time per guest).
When to Choose Hot Foiling
Hot foiling isn’t yet as well-known as engraving, but I must confess, it is my personal favorite! This style of customization is created by applying a piece of foil on leather or fabric, and using a tool to apply heat to the foil where you want your design. The heat transfers the foil onto the item, leaving a lasting effect. Engraving is cool, but in my opinion, foiling is even more premium.
The best surfaces for hot foiling are leather, PU leather, and fabric. I always ask clients to provide a sample if they desire hot foiling, because depending on the quality of the product, the heat will need to be a different temperature… and some PU leathers do not take the foil at all.
My go-to products for hot foiling:
Keychains
Bookmarks
Luggage tags
Journal covers
With the right preparation, hot foiling can be just as swift as engraving! The key with this activation is to have time ahead of the event to test materials and prep - I can complete initials on a journal in just a minute. Watching hot foiling unfold is SO satisfying. If you want to impress your guests, this is one they are going to be obsessed with.
I’ve noticed the brands and events that tend to gravitate towards foiling are the ones where the product is meant to be kept and used daily. Travel, hospitality, and corporate gifting are all great examples of industries that take advantage of this customization.
When to Choose Live Calligraphy
Although you may have seen my engraving videos… let’s not forget that I am a professional calligrapher! My training is in calligraphy, and I can bring the beauty of pen on paper to your live event as well as your day-of details.
Here’s the thing: calligraphy with ink is not limited to paper! I have also worked events with unexpected surfaces: ceramic tiles, gift boxes, even fabric and wood.
For Valentine’s Day, I worked at an event at Versace where I used a dip pen and gorgeous gold ink to write custom messages on gift box lids with luxury chocolates to give guests for the holiday.

Engraving and hot foiling may be swift and can be applied to unique surfaces, but calligraphy gives a different aesthetic. This medium is warmer, it’s organic, it feels handmade. There is no arguing that this was from the touch of a machine when you can see the strokes and the rise of the ink. When you want your favor to feel handmade, artisanal, and personal, calligraphy is the choice.
The best events to choose calligraphy: weddings, intimate dinners, stationery-forward brands, editorial brands, anything where you want writing by hand to be part of the experience. You can even incorporate live event work with your place cards! Have your event artist write the place cards during cocktail hour as guests are walking in so they can see the writing unfold, and then look at their name written in calligraphy throughout the dinner.
When to Choose Live Painting
Okay, I have mentioned that I am a professional calligrapher, but I am also a trained painter! (If you haven’t forgotten the message yet, I can do it all!) I even went to the New York School of the Arts to study the art of Renaissance oil painting.
Adding live painting to your event looks like paint markers on plastic, brushwork on glass, and imagery on gift boxes. The most common painted products I see are fragrance bottles and gift boxes.

Each customization option up until now has focused on lettering and writing a custom phrase or name of the guest. This is the option for when you want imagery, not just words. A rose on a perfume bottle, a bow on a gift box created with brushstrokes instead of ribbon. This is an activation that captivates guests.
Although painting is beautiful, it does require significantly more time than the other personalization options. This is a stellar option when you have more time per person (5-15 minutes), smaller guest counts, and when you’d rather have something that looks like fine art instead of personalization.
You can also add painting as an option to couple with engraving. This is a popular choice during the holidays with engraving on fragrance bottles.
When to Choose Pyrography or Debossing
My last offering for customizations is woodburning (or pyrography) on wood surfaces or debossing into leather.
Of all the options for personalization, this is the most tactile! You can literally feel the mark on the surface. Instead of adding something onto the surface, we transform the material itself.
Products that I have seen customized using this method: cutting boards, leather goods like boots or purses, journals, or accessories (luggage tags or belts).
This year, I have already done a couple of events with woodburning on cutting boards: for MSI Surfaces and for FOX to promote a new TV show. At each event, the guests were completely mesmerized by the experience! They couldn’t believe I was doing it by hand.

Then there is debossing with UGG directly onto their boots! I’ve been lucky to work with this brand multiple times, and each time the guests are FLOORED by the results. They whip out their phones to record the process as it unfolds, and take endless pictures to share the moment online. UGG is already a popular brand, but once their name is memorialized on it… they become a pair that will never be thrown away, no matter how worn down they are.
This is a great choice for an activation for lifestyle brands, fashion activations, corporate gifting, and holiday events. Any time a product has real perceived value, and the personalization elevates it further.

With the rise of technology comes a craving for analog. We don’t simply desire to see the result of gorgeous writing; we want to be a part of the creation itself. We want to see the pen across the page, smell the wood burning on the cutting board, witness the artist sweep the brush across the bottle with stars in our eyes.
Adding live art to your event isn’t just about increasing your sales or following trends – it’s about showing your guests that they matter, sharing an experience with your clients that makes them feel seen and adored.
